The World’s Poor

We seem to automatically focus on Africa and a small number of other failed states when discussing world poverty. The rapidly expanding population (the number of Africans is due to double between now and 2050) & onset of climate change problems will only complicate the continent’s road to prosperity. However, if the global community is serious about achieving the Millennium Development Goals (as they claim) – then we should be focusing on India. It is the slums of Mumbai and Delhi that account for approximately 50% of the world’s poor. It therefore seems surprising that those in the ‘development sphere’ regularly fail to account for the importance of India in global development.

It’s not a difficult choice over where to head next summer.
